32-bar jig for three couples in a four-couple longwise set Bars Description

1 – 8 1st couple, giving right hands, turn once round and cast to second place, then, giving left hands, turn to face first corners. 2nd couple step up on 3-4.

9 – 12 1st couple dance a half diagonal reel of 4 with first corners and pass by the right to face second corners. At the same time, first corners, giving right hands, turn halfway and cast into the opposite place.

13 – 16 1st couple dance a half diagonal reel of four with second corners and finish in second place, opposite sides. At the same time second corners, giving right hands, turn halfway and cast into the opposite place to finish in the order (3), (1), (2).

17 – 24 3rd, 1st and 2nd couples dance set and link twice to finish on own sides in the order 2, 1, 3.

25 – 32 1st woman with 2nd couple and 1st man with 3rd couple dance right hands across. 1st couple pass by the right and dance left hands across, 1st man with 2nd couple and 1st woman with 3rd couple.

Repeat, having passed a couple.

“During a very busy time dancing in Glasgow, with competitions and examination preparation for multiple units – I guess I had a lot of dancing on my mind because this dance just came to me in my sleep.”

32-bar strathspey for three couples in a four-couple longwise set

1 – 2 1st couple advance one step, take right hands briefly and retire one step.

3 – 4 1st couple, giving left hands, cross over.

5 – 6 1st couple lead down to second place in the middle of the set. 2nd couple step up.

7 – 8 1st couple turn with the left hand to face first corners.

9 – 16 1st couple turn first corners with the right hand, partner with the left hand, second corners with the right hand and, giving left hands to partner, cross to second place on own side of the dance.

17 – 18 2nd, 1st and 3rd women set.

19 – 20 2nd, 1st and 3rd women advance while the 2nd, 1st and 3rd men set.

21 – 24 2nd, 1st and 3rd women retire and set, while the 2nd, 1st and 3rd men advance and retire.

25 – 26 2nd, 1st and 3rd couples, giving right hands, cross over to finish ready to form a circle.

27 – 28 2nd, 1st and 3rd couples dance six hands round to the left halfway.

29 – 32 2nd, 1st and 3rd couples, giving left hands, cross over to form a circle and dance six hands round to the right.

Repeat, having passed a couple.

1 – 8 1st couple cross giving right hands and cast off one place as 2nd couple steps up. 1st couple turn by the left and cast off one place as 3rd couple steps up.

9 – 16 Mirror reels of three on the sides of the dance – 1st couple begin dancing in and up, 3rd couple begin dancing out and down, and 2nd couple begin dancing in and down.

17 – 24 1st couple dance to the top, nearer hands joined (as 3rd couple dances down to third place behind them, continuing the reel) and cast off one place. 1st couple dance a half figure of eight down around 3rd couple, ending in 2nd place on own sides.

25 – 32 1st couple turn 1st corner by the right, pass each other by right shoulders, turn 2nd corner by the right, and pass each other by right shoulders to end in progressed places (corners \ turn for 4 bars).

Repeat from new places.

This dance is dedicated to Kate & Ed Nealley, and to Inverarity, with many happy
memories of dancing there.
