1–16    Four progressive half-reels of three across the dance – danced as follows:
1–4    1st couple with 2nd woman dance a half-reel of three. 1st woman passes her partner with the right shoulder to begin and finishes in the middle of the set facing her own side of the dance. 1st man finishes in 1st woman’s original place and 2nd woman in 1st man’s original place.

5–8    1st couple with 2nd man dance a half-reel of three. 1st woman passes her partner with the left shoulder to begin and finishes in the middle of the set facing the men’s side of the dance. 1st man finishes in 2nd man’s original place and 2nd man in 1st woman’s original place.

9–12       1st couple repeat bars 1-4 with 3rd woman who finishes in 2nd man’s original place.

13–16    1st couple repeat bars 5-8 with 3rd man, who finishes in 2nd woman’s original place. 1st couple finish in third place in the middle of the set.

17–20    1st couple turn with right hands and cast up one place on own sides. 3rd couple step down on bars 19-20.

21–24    1st couple dance half figure of eight round 2nd couple.

25–28      2nd, 1st and 3rd couples turn partners with right hands three-quarters round to finish in a line up and down the dance; facing partners and retaining right hands, all set.

29–32    2nd, 1st and 3rd couples turn partners with right hands to finish on own sides and then, joining hands on the sides, set to partners.

Repeat, having passed a couple.

17–18    1st couple set to each other advancing to finish back to back facing second corners.(N.B. second corners have changed places.)

19–20    1st couple turn second corners with both hands to finish facing first corners.

21–24    1st couple dance a half reel of four with first corners. At the end, 1st couple curve round into second place on opposite sides.

25–26    3rd, 1st and 2nd couples set joining nearer hands on opposite sides.

27–28    “Link for three” – danced as follows:
First corners (at the left end of lines) dance to right end and curve round into place; 3rd woman finishes in third place on the men’s side facing up while 2nd man finishes in top place on the women’s side facing down.

1st couple (in middle of lines) pull right shoulders back and cast clockwise to finish with 1st woman in the middle of the dance in top place facing down and 1st man in the middle of the dance in third place facing up.

Second corners (at right end of lines) pull right shoulders back and cast clockwise, following 1st couple, to the left end of old line; 2nd woman finishes in top place on men’s side facing down while 3rd man finishes in third place on women’s side facing up. (N.B. 2nd couple are now on opposite sides in top place with 1st woman between them all facing down; third couple are on opposite sides in third place with 1st man between them all facing up.)

29–30    Joining hands in lines of three facing down and up, 2nd, 1st and 3rd couples set.

31–32    “Link for three” to finish on own sides in the order, 2, 1, 3.

Repeat, having passed a couple.

9-12    All advance for one step, retire for one step and change places by the right hand, up and down the dance.

13-16    All advance for one step, retire for one step, 2nd and 3rd couples change places by the right hand, up and down the dance while the 1st couple turns ¾ by the right hand to face 1st corners.

17-20    1st corners pass and turn: 1st couple dance around 1st corners by the right shoulder, dance in through the ends and pass each other by the right shoulder, up and down the dance to face 2nd corners, while corners dance in (1 bar), turn with two hands (1 bar), and dance out to place (2 bars).

21-24    2nd corners pass and turn, 1st couple pass right shoulders to finish to finish in 2nd place on their own sides.

25-32    All three couples circle round to the left and back to the right.

13–16    1st, 2nd and 3rd couples dance a snake pass, as follows: 1st man, followed by 3rd couple, dances out to the women’s side and up, across the top of the set, and down to second place on his own side. Meanwhile, 1st woman, followed by 2nd couple, dances out to the men’s side and down, across the bottom of the set, and up to second place on her own side. The two ‘snakes’ pass by the left.  All finish on own sides in order 3, 1, 2 with women facing up and men facing down.

17–24    All chase counter clockwise round the set. On bar 24, all dance into the middle to take promenade hold, facing up.

25–32    3rd, 1st and 2nd couples dance allemande.

9–16    1st man dances a reel of three across the dance with 2nd couple giving left shoulder to 2nd man, while 1st woman dances a reel of three across the dance with 3rd couple giving left shoulders to 3rd woman. The corners dance 8-bar reels, but, on the last two steps, 1st couple turn with the left hand half-way round to face first corners.

17–18    1st couple change places with first corners giving right hands while second corners set.   

19–20    First corners change places diagonally giving left hands while the other     dancers dance clockwise round the outside to the next corner position.   

21–24    Repeat bars 17-20 from new positions. Dancers in the middle change places with those in first corner positions giving right hands while those in second corner positions set (2 bars). Those now in the middle (3rd man and 2nd woman) change places diagonally giving left hands while the other four dancers dance clockwise round the outside to the next corner position.

25–28    Repeat bars 17-20 from new positions except that, on bars 27-28, 1st couple who are now in the middle, turn with the left hands to second place on opposite sides.

29–30    2nd, 1st and 3rd couples, joining nearer hands, set on the sides.

31–32    1st couple, giving right hands, cross to own sides.

At the same time, 3rd couple cross down between 4th couple, cast up round them and dance into the middle to finish back to back between 4th couple, 3rd woman facing 4th man and 3rd man facing 4th woman.

5–8        All set and turn the person they are facing with both hands. (The turn is about three-quarters round on the men’s side and one and a quarter times on the women’s side.) All finish in original places, 1st and 3rd couples on opposite sides. Women face each other diagonally while the men face out.

9–12    1st woman with 2nd woman dance back to back while their partners dance         clockwise half way round them to change places. Meanwhile 3rd and 4th couples dance similarly.

13–16    1st and 2nd men dance back to back while their partners dance clockwise half way round them to change places. Meanwhile 3rd and 4th couples dance similarly.

17–20    1st couple (in second place) turn with the right hand half way round, lead down and dance straight into fourth place while 3rd couple (in fourth place) cross, giving right hands, and cast up to second place. All finish on opposite sides in order 2,3,4 1.

21–24    All cross to own sides, giving right hands, and set to partners.

25–32    2nd couple with 3rd couple and 4th couple with 1st couple dance a poussette        right round.

Repeat, from new positions.

9-16    2nd, 1st and 3rd couples dance “Angus MacKinnon Triangles”.
9-10    Joining hands as in double triangles, 2nd 1st and 3rd couples set.
11-12    1st couple, with two pas de basque, dance out to opposite sides and turn right sbout to face in. 2nd and 3rd  couples dance in and turn right about to finish back to back with partners facing out.
13-14    Joining hands as in double triangles all 3 couples set.
15-16    2nd and 3rd couples, with two pas de basque, dance out to own sides and turn right about to face in. 1st couple dance in and turn right about to finish back to back facing out.

17-24    1st couples turn 1st corner with the right hand, pass each other  right shoulder, turn 2nd corner with the right hand and pass each other right shoulder to finish in 2nd place own sides. (Corners dance for 4 bars)

25-28    All three couples dance six hands round to the left for six steps and then on bar 28 cross right foot over left and, keeping the weight on both feet and releasing hands, picot rount to face out pulling left shoulde rback.

29-32    All dance around in a chase (anti-clockwise) back to own sides.

A TRIP TO CRINAN
From Coast To Coast With Scotch Mist
32-bar jig for three couples in a four-couple longwise set

1-8    1st woman, followed by 2nd and 3rd women, dance across above 1st man, dance round 1st, 2nd and 3rd men, back to place.

9-16    3rd man, followed by 2nd and 1st men, dance round 3rd, 2nd, and 1st women, and dance down the middle of the set. On bar 16, the women dance in and join right hands with their partner facing down.

17-24    3rd couple, followed by 2nd and 1st couple, lead down the middle and up, with 1st couple and 2nd couple remaining in the centre.

25-32    1st and 2nd couples dance the allemande.

Devised by Andrew and Mairi Collins, Oakville. Crinan is a small village at the Atlantic end of the Crinan Canal in Argyllshire. The Crinan Canal was opened in 1801 as a shortcut for boats from Loch Fyne to the Sound of Jura. Crinan was a childhood playground of Mairi’s, and we visit whenever we go over.

1–8        1st couple lead down the middle and up, finishing in the middle of the set. 2nd and 3rd couples step in on bar 8.

9–16    1st, 2nd and 3rd couples promenade. On bars 15–16, 1st couple cast off to second place, while 2nd couple dance up to first place and 3rd couple return to original place.

17–20    1st couple, passing each other by the right (without giving hands), cross to the opposite sides and turn first corners with right hand, to finish with 1st woman between 2nd couple facing down and 1st man between 3rd couple facing up.

21–24    1st couple pass each other by the right up and down the dance and turn second corners with the right hand. 1st couple finish in second place on opposite sides.

25–28    1st man dances right hands across with 2nd couple, while 1st woman dances right hands across with 3rd couple.

29–32    1st woman crosses up between 2nd couple and casts off on her own side to second place, while 1st man crosses down between 3rd couple and casts up on his own side to second place.

Repeat having passed a couple.

17–24    1st man dances a reel of three with 2nd couple passing 2nd man by the right shoulder to begin while 1st woman dances a reel of three with 3rd couple passing 3rd man by the right shoulder to begin.

25–28    1st  woman casts up round 3rd man and dances across the set to finish in second place on own side while 1st man dances down the middle and casts up round 3rd man to finish in second place on own side.

29–32    1st  couple turn with the right hand once round.

Devised by Romaine Butterfield, RSCDS New Zealand Branch and originally published by that branch in Island Bay Collection (1983). The dance was devised for Noeline O’Connor and Iain Boyd and the name refers to the fact that Iain courted Noeline for some time.

9–16    Reels of three on the sides, 1st couple passing second corners by the left to begin. 1st couple finish in second place on opposite sides, facing out. 2nd and 3rd couples finish in the middle, nearer hands joined facing each other up and down the dance.

17–20    1st couple dance counter clockwise half way round the set to second place on own sides while 2nd and 3rd couples advance and retire, finishing on own sides.

21–24    2nd, 1st and 3rd couples turn partners with the right hand.

25–32    2nd, 1st and 3rd couples dance six hands round and back.

32-bar reel for five dancers in a square formation.

Four dancers numbered 1 to 4 clockwise each stand at one corner of a square facing a fifth dancer who is in the middle facing up towards dancers 1 and 4.

1–4        Dancers 5, 1 and 2 dance right hands across once round.

5–8        Dancers 5, 3 and 4 dance left hands across once round.

9–16    Dancers 5, 1 and 3 dance a diagonal reel of three, dancers 5 and 1 pass by the right to start. Dancer 5 finishes back in place facing dancer 4.

17–24    Dancers 5, 4 and 2 dance a diagonal reel of three, dancers 5 and 4 pass by the left to start. Dancer 5 finishes back in place facing dancer 1.

25–26    Dancers 5 and 1 change places, passing by the right.

27–28    Dancers 1 and 4 change places, passing by the right.

29–30    Dancers 4 and 3 change places, passing by the right.

31–32    Dancers 3 and 2 change places, passing by the right. Dancer 2 finishes in the middle facing up.

Repeat four times, each time from new positions.

In bars 25-32 the track from one corner to the next should be a smooth curve.

1–8        1st and 2nd couples set and rotate. 2nd couple finish in first place facing down and 1st couple in second place facing up.

9–16    2nd, 1st and 3rd couples dance reels of three on own sides. To begin, 2nd and 1st couples pass by the right.

17–20    1st couple set and, giving right hands, turn three quarters to be side by side in the middle of the set facing own sides.

21–24    1st woman with 2nd couple and 1st man with 3rd couple dance left hands across. 1st couple finish in second place on opposite sides.

25–28    1st couple set and, giving right hands, turn three quarters to be side by side in the middle of the set facing opposite sides.

5–8        1st couple dance down between 3rd couple and cast up to second place.

9–10    1st man and 3rd woman, 1st woman and 2nd man, giving right hands, change places.

11–12    1st man and 2nd man, 1st woman and 3rd woman, giving left hands, change places.

13–14    1st man and 3rd man, 1st woman and 2nd woman, giving right hands, change places.

15–16    1st man and 2nd woman, 1st woman and 3rd man, giving left hands, change places.

17–20    3rd, 1st and 2nd couples dance set and link for three to finish in lines across the set, 1st man between 2nd couple facing down and 1st woman between 3rd couple facing up.

21–24    2nd, 1st and 3rd couples dance set and link for three to finish 1st couple in second place on opposite sides, 2nd couple in first place and 3rd couple in original place.

25–28    1st woman dances a half figure of eight, crossing up round 2nd woman to begin. 1st man dances a half figure of eight, crossing down round 3rd man to begin.

1–2         1st and 2nd couples turn with both hands three quarters round to finish in a line up and down the dance, men facing up and women facing down.

3–6        1st and 2nd couples dance a half reel of four.

7–8        1st couple turn with both hands half way and pull back right shoulders to finish facing first corners while 2nd couple turn with both hands three quarters of the way round to finish in first place on own sides.

9–12    1st couple set to first corners and, pulling back right shoulders, dance round one another to face second corners.

13–16    1st couple set to second corners and, pulling back right shoulders, 1st woman dances up to finish between 2nd couple facing 2nd woman, while 1st man dances down to finish between 3rd couple, facing 3rd man.

17–20    Right shoulder half reels of three across the dance, 1st woman with 2nd couple and 1st man with 3rd couple. On bar 20, 1st couple turn with the left hand half way to finish 1st woman between 3rd couple facing 3rd woman’s original position and 1st man between 2nd couple facing his original position.

21–24    Left shoulder half reels of three across the dance. 1st couple finish in second place on own sides. (2nd and 3rd couple dance a full reel of three on bars 17-24.)

25–32    1st and 3rd couples dance a bourell to finish in order 2, 3, 1.

Repeat, with a new top couple.

This dance was inscribed to Mr. Donald Davidson, a most dedicated dancer, on his birthday.

1–6        1st woman casts off two places, crosses to the opposite side and dances up behind 2nd and 3rd men to her partner’s original place. 1st man follows his partner, crossing over and dancing behind 2nd and 3rd women, and up the middle to his partner’s original place.

7–8        1st couple set to each other.

9–14    1st couple repeat bars 1-6, with 1st man casting off and 1st woman following. 1st couple finish in original places.

15–16    1st couple set to each other.

17–24    1st couple lead down the middle and up to finish facing each other in the middle of the set with both hands joined. 2nd couple step in.

25–32    1st and 2nd couples dance a poussette.

Repeat, having passed a couple.
